Sveti Ostrog

Saint Basil of Ostrog ( Popovo Polje , 1610 – Ostrog Monastery , 1671 ) was a 17th-century Herzegovinian bishop , today a universal Orthodox saint .

He comes from the Serbian Jovanović family from eastern Herzegovina .

Vasilije was ordained in the Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary . He was elected and consecrated as Bishop of Zahumlje and Skenderija with a see in the Monastery of Tvrdoš near Trebinje .

When the Turks destroyed Tvrdoš , Basil moved to the Ostrog monastery ( Montenegro , near the modern town of Danilovgrad ).

Before the Turkish invasion, Montenegrins twice moved the relics of Saint Basil of Ostrog to Cetinje .

The Orthodox Day of Saint Basil of Ostrog is celebrated on May 12. His miraculous powers and his tomb have survived despite turbulent times. Regardless of whether they are Catholics , Muslims or Protestants , everyone seeks solace in the saint’s powers.
